The core work of the Philosophy department is developing the theory and practice of an entirely new discipline called ‘Evolutionary Mentology’ (EM). Evolutionary Mentology is a philosophical inquiry into the origins, evolution, and functioning of both the human mind and the process of Nature as a whole, their relationship and future evolutionary direction. The purpose of this comprehensive inquiry is to enable a contemporary individual to reduce the contradictions and conflicts that he/she is facing today and increase his/her pleasures and happiness, in both the individual and social dimensions. How? Through discovering some new tools of understanding and doing, which he/she can use to intelligently restructure and evolve his/her own mental processes and capabilities—emotional, intellectual, sensitivity and habit processes—and to make a new culture, politics, economics, in short, a new society.

The raw material of this entire body of thinking exists in the form of audio lectures given by Raza and their transcripts on a whole range of interconnected areas and issues of inquiry, offering new insights and knowledge going beyond what contemporary natural and social sciences are coming up with. One can get a fair idea of its scope from the following list of topics it deals with.

  1. The macro dimension of this inquiry includes topics like:

  • Nature existing and operating as a Unified Logic Process

  • The evolutionary logic through which new phenomena emerge in Nature

  • Nature’s own evolution from unintelligent, random logic to programmed and then intelligent or conscious logic.

  • The logic and processes leading to the birth of living things and their brain/mind processes

  • The evolution of the brain/mind processes up to the human mind

  • The role of pleasure and pain in evolution

  • The nature and core issues of human evolution as opposed to animal evolution; going beyond the Darwinian and Neo-Darwinian frameworks to understand hitherto and future human evolution

  • The current evolutionary stage and problems of the human mind, viable directions for its future evolution, and its connection with the evolutionary theme of Nature

  • The role of emotional and intellectual processes in further mental evolution.

  1. The micro dimension encompasses topics like:

  • Past and currently reigning concepts and ideas of knowing and changing the mind

  • The new form of ‘consciousness’ and ‘awareness’ for intelligently knowing the mind

  • Transition from gene-based mind to a post-genetic intellect based mind

  • The connection between genes and brain/mind processes, and between brain and mental processes, the non-biological functioning of mental genes, how genes control the functioning of our mental processes.

  • The different modules that form the mind; emotional, intellectual, habit and Will modules, the logic of their interconnected functioning, the energy forms in which they are operating

  • Mental response system and contemporary human personality; its origins, formation, components, functioning, and current crisis

  • Making of mental tools for restructuring the existing gene-based mind and evolving the post-genetic intellect based mind

  • The process of internal communication between verbal and nonverbal processes for mental restructuring

  • Obstacles in mental restructuring and evolution

  • Monitoring and verification of the process of intelligent mental restructuring and evolution

  1. The social dimension of this inquiry covers topics like:

  • A critique of the past social thinking and movements (both of political revolt and social reform) for social change

  • The nature, scope and features of the new movement for change required in contemporary times; primary role of mental and social culture in this movement

  • Intelligent mental processes, as new means of production to spearhead the movement for social change

  • Connection between religion, evolution and revolution; significance of redefining and incorporating the role of religion in any contemporary movement for social change

  • The need for and process of Renaissance in contemporary human society to give birth to a new civilization

After 23 years of continuous work on recording, editing, composing and organizing the growing body of thought in all these areas, this work is now available on the following website:

The purpose of this new online platform is to share and communicate the detailed work of Mentology to philosophers, scientists and other interested individuals, within and outside of Pakistan, and engage them in a dialogue so that further crystallization and maturing of this work can take place through a fruitful exchange of critical comments, feedback, etc.The ultimate objective is to enable a group of people to start connecting and living with and applying these ideas and then coming together to practically work for the making of a new social movement based on this new framework of thinking and doing.
